Researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) have performed life cycle assessments (LCA) of three batteries for plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and full performance battery electric (BEV) vehicles. They also found higher life cycle global warming emissions than have been previously reported. —Majeau-Bettez et al.

A number of articles about "green cars" worth perusing in Saturday's New York Times Automotive section. Usually devoted to crass boosterism of America's largest manufacturing industry, these articles still contain a lot of that. The meme of the ugly green car gets its own article ( Once Frumpy, Green Cars Start Showing Some Flash ).

However, as the article points out, it feels like a trip down a well-traveled green road to nowhere. took an image beating when it backed away from a pledge to put 250,000 hybrids on the road by 2010. Arguably, the Prius hybrid halo has enabled Toyota's more recent play for the American's profitable big SUV and truck market.

Lutz responds to the sense that GM might be pulling back from its commitment to the Volt that resulted from Sharon Terlep's Detroit News article a month or so ago. (My Asked why not Nickel Metal Hydride batteries in the Volt, at least to start, he says "NiMH just doesn't do it." Well worth a listen. My take at the time here.)
