However, how long it takes to hit the break-even point depends on many factors , like the cost differential of a comparable ICE vehicle, depreciation, taxes, insurance costs, the cost of electricity/petrol in a region, whether charging takes place at home, etc.

The biggest problem with recharging at home - as already alluded to in the article, is that electric cars are mostly marketed as city vehicles. No single vehicle does it all even in todays petrol world. Drive in, drop the underslung pack, hydraulically uplift a fresh pack, drive out. I would prefer to recharge at home, and could do so.

GM says it is already looking ahead to the next generation of Volt-based vehicles — it unveiled the Cadillac Converj concept in January — and says costs will come down as the technology spreads to more models.
