The world’s first-to-market electric pickup truck, it turns out, isn’t from Ford, General Motors, or a late-to-market Tesla Cybertruck. That capability begins with four individual electric motors, as I experienced on a stirring R1T test in and around New York. I’m looking forward to my first hardcore off-road runs in the Rivian.

An executive express with hips like Sharika and devastatingly powerful electric motors is the simpleton’s choice for a list like this, especially when one deploys all of its 637 horses for a 3.0 While making a final decision on full-size trucks felt impossible, the midsize entries from General Motors walked away with an easier victory.

The only upgrade is the Plaid version that features even faster acceleration from three motors, producing sub-two second 0-60 runs. Some promises are being kept, some have been deferred, but we see a solid crop of 19 very likely new entries fairly evenly split between affordable and luxury electrics. This fancy model will come later, but we’ll see an affordable working truck in 2022.
