The team’s first step in February 2018 was to use GRIDSMART cameras to create an image dataset of vehicle classes. Lacking an available city-wide grid of intersections equipped with GRIDSMART traffic lights, Karnowski’s team instead turned to computer simulations to test their system.

2019 Kona Electric models will be produced in Ulsan, Korea and available in the fourth quarter of 2018, with initial availability in California and subsequently in the ZEV-focused states in the western and northeastern regions of the US market. Some features can also be controlled via Android Wear and Apple Watch smartwatch apps.

Several companies are developing programs for package delivery using drones, including Amazon, Google, UPS and Deutsche Post DHL. The researchers set out to find if drone delivery is a promising idea for the environment or whether, like conventional overnight package delivery, it leads to much higher energy use and carbon emissions.
