It is the latest concrete step towards Volvo Cars’ ambition to have climate-neutral manufacturing by 2025, part of a wider climate plan that aims to reduce the overall carbon footprint per car by 40% between 2018 and 2025. By 2040, Volvo Cars aims to be a climate-neutral company.

For example, by implementing rail transport it reduced CO 2 emissions by almost 75% on the route between its Ghent, Belgium-based manufacturing plant and a purpose-built depot in northern Italy. Both initiatives form part of the climate action plan that Volvo Cars revealed this year.

The project, called “European Battery Innovation” (EuBatIn) was jointly prepared and notified by Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden. In 2018, the Commission adopted the Strategic Action Plan for Batteries and has promoted a wide range of initiatives as part of the plan.
