Consumers bought 505,900 SUVs in July, as demand increased by 8.7%. Volkswagen Group led the SUV segment, as the German maker recorded 25.7% drop on the same period last year.

In December, BEVs ran fast (168.912 units, +223% YoY), but PHEVs are were even faster (+347%, 112,260 units), so in the final 2020 numbers, while plugin hybrids ended below (46% vs 54% share) fully electrics, they recovered a massive 10% share regarding the previous year. In February, the leader was the Volvo XC40 PHEV, scoring its second win in a row, this time with 231 units, while its BEV twin was 5th, with 114 registrations, both helping the Swedish SUV to become the 3rd best selling model in the overall market (#1 Ford Fiesta; #2 Kia Picanto), as 59% of the smaller Volvo registrations came from these two.

While BEVs were a hot item last month, jumping 81%, to a record 407.000 units, PHEVs were even hooter, shooting 205% in December, allowing them to end the year with 31% of plugin sales, up 5% from the 26% of 2019, giving credit to those that say that PHEVs will still be around for a while. But more on that later.

Overall auto volume was 19,366 units, up some 19% YoY, and the highest March sales since at least 2016 (though compensating from a hangover earlier in Q1). Plugless hybrids (HEVs) did better than PHEVs, growing their share from a year ago (6.1% For those keeping records, the iX1 a is mid sized SUV (almost the same length as the VW ID.4).
