In 2015, Mumgaard huddled with a group of his fellow MIT researchers to rethink the approach to fusion power. At this point, CFS’s preferred approach is to use a blanket of molten salt, which could also breed tritium (also known as hydrogen-3), a rare isotope used to fuel magnetic confinement reactors.
