GM waxed hot and cold on the EV1. President Obama has stated a commitment to 1 million plug-in cars by 2015. The federal consumer tax credit awaits major automaker cars that can claim them. The taxpayer is financing the American automakers’ survival and their future. Will we get our money’s worth? It’s far from a slam dunk.

But not a single production plug-in electric vehicle sold to date, from GM’s early EV1 to today’s Tesla, has had a warranty of more than five years, noted Plug In America advisory board member Chelsea Sexton. Moreover, several states are implementing additional tax credits of up to $5,000 per vehicle.
