Zero-emission vehicles include battery-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles, and hydrogen fuel-cell-electric vehicles; the technologies can be applied in passenger cars, trucks and transit buses. US electric car sales in 2012 more than tripled to about 52,000 from 17,000 in 2011.

Honda has been developing hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) technology for many years and plans to launch a new hydrogen vehicle using this technology. In addition to developing its fuel cell technology, since 2013, Honda has been collaborating with General Motors to develop fuel cell systems and hydrogen storage technology.
