At the Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan Motor unveiled a concept vehicle that embodies Nissan’s vision of the future of autonomous driving and EVs: the Nissan IDS Concept. In August 2013, Ghosn said that by 2020 Nissan plans to equip innovative autonomous drive technology on multiple vehicles.

Beginning this year, the partners will take steps to prepare investors, the general public, media, sponsors and other interested parties for the impending series, with the goal of being ready to launch the EV series by 2013. The AEGT category is represented by the Quimera AEGT, featuring a powertrain up to 600 kW with carbon fiber chassis.

BMW unveiled the BMW i8 2+2 plug-in hybrid sports car ( earlier post ) today at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. The lower accelerated mass in the event of a crash means that energy-absorbing structures can be scaled back, cutting the weight of the vehicle. The occupant protection concept is rounded off by standard safety equipment.

In a world premiere, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the self-driving fuel cell hybrid electric F 015 Luxury in Motion concept at the CES. Another key element of the body design concept is the innovative saloon-door-style door system featuring rear-hinged rear doors. The crash-responsive beltlines underneath the side windows are vital here.

This is the opposite of the approach taken by Toyota with its Mirai fuel cell vehicle ( earlier post ) and Honda with its new FCV Concept ( earlier post ). The h-tron concept car shows that we have also mastered fuel cell technology. An outer skin made from carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) encases the inner aluminum shell.

At BMW Group’s Innovation Days: Mobility of the Future briefing in Munich, the company outlined its plans for the upcoming electric Megacity Vehicle (MCV), due onto the market in 2013 ( earlier post ), as well as the new LifeDrive architecture upon which the MCV is based. The Megacity Vehicle is a revolutionary automobile.
