40 BYD e6-Based Electric Taxis Enter Service in Shenzhen City

Forty battery-electric taxis-based on BYD’s e6—officially entered service in Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province. Shenzhen is the first city to officially put electric taxis in operation in China, according to Hu Jianping, president of Shenzhen Bus Group (SBG) at the launch ceremony.

City of Bogota, Columbia launches electric taxi pilot; part of C40-CCI EV Network

The City of Bogota, Colombia, has launched a pilot project to spur the use of electric vehicles in Bogota’s center-city taxi fleet. The first taxis are expected to be operational in the city in the next few months. On 29 December 2011, the City of Bogota enacted Decree No. 677 to support the project over a three-year period.

BYD and Hertz partnering on EV rentals in China

As part of the partnership, Hertz will rent BYD’s e6 electrical vehicle (EV) to Chinese consumers, municipalities and government agencies. The core technology of BYD’s e6 is BYD’s internally developed lithium iron-phosphate (FE) battery technology. 300 more BYD e6s were added to these fleets in July for the 2011 Shenzhen Universiade.

Bob Lutz, the outgoing vice chairman of GM, has said the company will produce about 8,000 Chevy Volts in 2011. In March, BYD chief executive officer Wang Chuanfu announced that in the first half of 2010 the company will sell only 100 e6 cars, to a taxi company in Shenzhen.
