The purpose of the paper (which Richard Wallace, CAR’s Director Transportation Systems Analysis Group announced during a session exploring the same topic at the Business of Plugging In 2010 conference in Detroit) is threefold.

A123Systems scalable prismatic module is reconfigurable for applications ranging from 1 kWh to more than 100 kWh. Ah of capacity, and is targeted for mass production start in 2010. The 20 Ah cell is designed for plug-in and extended-range EV applications. Commercial mass production for the cell is due to start in 2010.

As part of the new plan, GM will accelerate the wind-down or sale of HUMMER, Saturn and Saab to the end of 2009, and phase out Pontiac by the end of 2010. The Pontiac brand will be phased out by the end of 2010. GM has received final bids for HUMMER from potential purchasers and is in the process of reviewing them.

GM is producing 2 vehicles a day with the goal of having a total of 76 vehicles available by the end of the summer; these vehicles will be used for validation testing ranging from fit and finish reviews, to durability testing to eventual crash testing. Applications including basic research on batteries, battery materials, inverters, converters, motors or subcomponents for EDV drivetrains will not be considered for comprehensive review. The classes of vehicles that are covered range from light duty passenger vehicles to medium and heavy duty over-the-road trucks.

The head of Chryslers ENVI division, Lou Rhodes, told AutoblogGreen this morning that Chrysler is marketing this battery-only version of the van to commercial fleet customers who typically have shorter range requirements.
