Toyota plans to receive supplies of lithium ion batteries, which have higher output and capacity than the nickel-metal hydride batteries now used in the Prius and other hybrids. Performance evaluations for the lithium ion batteries have already been conducted. To date, Toyota’s sole supplier of NiMH batteries is PEVE.

The easiest conversions are for 2004-2008 Prius (not 2001-2003 Prius) and the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner Hybrid. We will have similar solutions available for better (but more expensive) nickel-metal hydride or lithium-ion batteries.) We believe both NiMH and Li-Ion are ready. So far, most start as hybrids.

In late 2008, BYD started selling the first production PHEV in China. First Escape PHEV delivered to SCE Nov 2007; 20 in 2008-2009. 2010 Prius designed to be manufactured with NiMH or Lithium batteries. Batteries not ready. Has shown some concept fuel-cell PHEVs. There are companies that are reinventing the lead-acid battery to make it more competitive with lithium-ion and nickel metal hydride in terms of storage capacity versus weight, durability, and cold weather performance.
