EPA fuel economy report finds weight and power leveling off, footprint stable

The report found that fuel economy for the US fleet continues to improve. Preliminary MY 2017 values suggest that average weight will be up 9 pounds and horsepower up 2 hp. DOE releases three reports showing strong growth in US fuel cell and hydrogen market

This is roughly a 34% increase over total shipments in 2011 and a 321% increase over total shipments in 2008. The stationary sector continues to drive overall shipment growth, increasing from about 2,000 shipments in 2008 to about 25,000 shipments in 2012. Light duty vehicles. Industry survey finds aluminum use in autos at all-time high; average per vehicle use expected to more than double from 2012 by 2025

The report expects aluminum to double its share of the light vehicle material mix by 2025 vs. the 2008 EPA baseline vehicle. Body, bumper and closure content grew by 58% from 2009 to 2012, with 30% of all hoods on 2012 vehicles being aluminum, saving a total of 100 million pounds (45,359 tonnes) of vehicle weight across the entire fleet.

DOE fuel cell market report shows continued growth, with sales surpassing $1.3B worldwide in 2013

More than 35,000 fuel cell systems were shipped in 2013, an increase of more than 26% over 2012 and 400% more than 2008. Many automakers anticipate commercialization by 2017. Honda had 52, putting it in fourth place behind Samsung, but overall the company is number two as far as cumulative patents since 2002.
