Lane Transit District (LTD) in Oregon has awarded New Flyer a contract for 11 Xcelsior CHARGE battery-electric forty-foot heavy-duty transit buses, including seven ABB depot chargers to support electric bus infrastructure development. LTD has a longstanding commitment to sustainability.

In September 2004 the California Air Resources Board (ARB) passed regulations to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) from new passenger vehicles starting in 2009. The national program ramps up slightly more slowly than the California program envisioned, but does get to the same fleet average endpoint.

On the positive side, the current regulatory situation has resulted in a high likelihood of enthusiastic participation by the container fleets, especially those that have vessel traffic to/from California ports. At ports in Oregon and Washington, grid-based cold ironing infrastructure is limited or nonexistent. —Joe Pratt.
