The vehicle scooped the Car of the Year award in Japan in its debut year, and the third generation of the model took the prize again in 2009. When sales of the Civic Hybrid started to flag, Honda introduced the Insight Hybrid earlier this year. It has also launched flexible fuel vehicles in Brazil.

In China and Japan, where other standards already exist (GB/T and CHAdeMO, respectively), country-specific requirements will be accommodated. The first technology demonstrator was the compact A2H2 in 2004, which was already equipped with a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEM). Further increases are expected.
