As GM talks up the Volt, it ensures EV1s at museums and universities not be returned to the road as electric cars. In mid-January a 2002 RAV4 EV south of San Francisco came to the end of its five year lease. You'd be wrong.

You can fill it up at the gas station, and you can plug it in to any 120-volt outlet. General Motors has announced its intention to mass-produce two PHEVs -- a Saturn VUE SUV, and the Chevy Volt, a series hybrid (where only the electric motor powers the wheels and the gasoline engine recharges the batteries).

BYDs plug-in, called the F3DM (for "dual mode"), goes farther on a single charge - 62 miles - than other electric vehicles and sells for about $22,000, less than the plug-in Prius and much-hyped Chevy Volt are expected to cost when they hit the market in late 2010. "Its a completely different business model."
