has begun sales of the all-new CR-Z (“Compact Renaissance Zero”) hybrid ( earlier post ) in Japan on Friday, February 26, 2010. Honda is targeting monthly sales of 1,000 units of the new hybrid. The CR-Z is Honda’s third hybrid currently in the market, along with the Civic Hybrid and new Insight.

When the first Honda Insight and Toyota Prius hybrids launched in 1999 and 2000, expectations for their sales were low. And hybrids indeed logged annual sales in the low thousands until the second-generation Prius came along for 2004.

Place this one firmly in the ‘rumour mill’ for now, but reports are suggesting that Honda may soon add two hybrid sports cars to its fleet. After the introduction of the second generation Insight, the Japanese car manufacturer has committed itself to the further development of hybrid drive vehicles.
