Results of a Rice University laboratory study suggests that using foam may maximize enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Oil resides in formations of rock and sand in small cracks and crevices that have proved devilishly difficult to tap. Drillers pump various substances downhole to loosen and either push or carry oil to the surface.

The findings may enable more effective enhanced oil recovery operations using foam. Neighboring bubbles pinch a third into two before it enters a constriction like those found in oil-bearing reservoirs. Normally, gas has very low viscosity and it tends to flow through rock and not displace oil and water.
