Clearly battery toxicity is a concern - although the move to nickel metal hydride batteries represents a clear improvement over rechargeable nickel cadmium. Nickel metal hydride batteries can also be fully recycled, with Toyota part of one of the largest recycling programmes.

The vehicle will be recharged at night, plugged into a standard home outlet. it stands for “Build Your Dreams”—claims to supply 65 percent of the world’s nickel-cadmium batteries, and 30 percent of its lithium ion mobile phone batteries. Toyota also is developing a plug-in hybrid, expected on the road by 2010.

"On some products, the costs, particularly in advanced technologies, are high," he said in a lengthy interview with Automotive News (free subscription required). The mines in Canada where the nickel & cadmium are mined is one of the most polluted places on Earth. It is simply the cost of doing business. I dont get it.
