We were surprised to cross the 30 mpg mark for this 3,915-pound, five-passenger midsize SUV.

The secret is that Polestar is an electric performance brand from Volvo and its Chinese owner, Geely Holding. It was established in 2017 and is based in Gothenburg, Sweden, where Volvo has been for a long time (although the Polestar 2 is built in China). Inside, the 2021 Polestar 2 shows its Volvo origins.

The EPA fuel economy numbers of 21 mpg city/26 highway/23 combined are almost exactly what we got covering 301 miles driving through Southern California. We were hoping to get 30 mpg on the highway, but no matter how hard we tried the best we could do was 28.1

The answer, which I was able to get to elevator-pitch length, is that Polestar is the all-electric division of Volvo Cars, and the Polestar 2 is its first all-electric car here in the States. The Polestar 2 at first looks like a Volvo, but upon closer inspection has a style all its own. Good enough? Not nearly. Speak to me.

Polestar and Volvo were acquired by Geeley, a Chinese automobile company, in 2010. Polestar was founded in 1995 for the purpose of performance-tuning Volvos. Volvo brought them in-house in 2015 when Polestar badging appeared on Volvos, designating that performance was awaiting the driver.
