Panasonic Corporation’s NiMH 12V Energy Recovery Systems ( earlier post ) is being applied in the new idle-stop (stop-start) minicars just introduced by Nissan Motor and Mitsubishi Motors in Japan: the Nissan DAYZ ROOX and Mitsubishi eK Space. The new models were designed and developed for the Japanese market by NMKV Co.,

PEVE provides the NiMH packs for current Toyota hybrids. Through economies of scale, Toyota hopes to sell its new plug-in hybrids at a price comparable to Mitsubishi Motors Corp.’s The plug-ins will use Li-ion batteries produced by Toyota’s joint venture with Panasonic Corp., Panasonic EV Energy Co. million yen [about US$47,700].

Mitsubishi could be the first with cars for sale if the UK distributor has its way. The first cars will utilize NiMH batteries, as do the Toyota test platform Plug-in Priuses at the University of California. From where I sit (in the driver's seat of a NiMH powered Toyota RAV4 EV) this seems eminently practical.

The company also recently signed an agreement with Mitsubishi for the introduction of the electric iOn—based on the Mitsubishi i-MiEV—at the end of 2010. Ah NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) battery pack is located under the rear load area floor, near the electric motor. Sanyo provided its expertise on the NiMH high voltage batteries.

O’Brien and Toyota sounded a more cautious note than Brian Verprauskus from Nissan, who discussed Nissan’s LEAF vehicle and program; David Patterson from Mitsubishi on the i-MiEV; and JB Straubel from Tesla Motors. Tesla has its EVs in the market, Nissan and Mitsubishi are poised to enter their EVs in the US soon.

Finally, in a first-of-its-kind partnership in the United States, Mitsubishi announced a strategic alliance with Oregon to develop an electric car charging infrastructure in the state. Even so, most next gen EV manufacturers are focused on lithium ion (and to a lesser extent NiMH) as the core technology to power their cars.

The smallfour-seater Mitsubishi iMiEV uses lithium-ion but is likely to cost up to£20,000 when it becomes available here later this year. Peter Roach, Birmingham, UK Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries powered the late GM EV1 and still power hundreds of Toyota RAV4 EVs, some over 100,000 miles.
