The Chevrolet Volt was a purpose-built plug-in hybrid, with an electric motor driving the car and a small gas engine that charged the small battery when it was depleted.

Stronger permanent magnets in the rotor have higher capacity for thermal load, stator wires have higher cross-section and more effective turns, and coolant that combines oil and water offers more ability to shed heat.

Thankfully, since parts of the powertrain in the Circuit are also used in other Chrysler ENVI vehicles - like the all-electric USPS minivan that was unveiled earlier today - work that is done on one model can be applied to others. Chevys volt is exactly what a family with kids would need, as is the Tesla model S, and yea, theyre both pricey.
