The Dutch Cabinet on Friday approved a new road tax bill that would eliminate the current motor vehicle tax and purchase tax and replace them with a charge per kilometer driven, starting in 2012 and increasing through 2018. The average rate for a car is expected to be: Dutch Mileage Tax.

As sales of electric vehicles begin to reach significant numbers across the US, states are exploring approaches to replace lost tax revenue since EV drivers don’t pay fuel taxes as drivers of gas-powered cars do at gas stations. Unfortunately there is currently no simple and agreed upon best replacement for the fuel tax.

30 mpg is nice, but it took them 20 years to get there, while the Hondas and Toyotas of the world have been quietly churning out great cars that great mileage for years, not to mention every GM vehicle Ive owned is a pile of garbage, including my current one. Ill never purchase one again, no matter what the mpgs.
