We project that electric vehicles will save the city $110,000 per year in reduced fuel and maintenance, costs that we would otherwise have to spend on gas-powered vehicles. In 2010, the city converted 15 Toyota Prius hybrids to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

But rather, depending on the PHEV‘s driver habits and the PHEV itself, they can actually be really good in helping reduce tailpipe emissions or slightly worse than say a regular Prius hybrid. They require two separate powertrains, are heavier, still use gas and require maintenance like oil changes.

“The Toyota Prius took over five years to reach break-even and has gone on to be a wild success.&# Also maintenance on these (no oil changes to speak of) etc will cost much less than an internal combution propelled car. So the Volt would cost $32,500–not so much more than what people are reportedly paying for the Prius.

If you’re a commuter in California, there are now more reasons to drive an electric car than just saving on tax incentives & rebates , your carbon footprint, fuel, and maintenance costs.
