The real-world share of electric driving for PHEVs, on average, is about half the share considered in the type-approval values. Statistically, private users of vehicles in Germany re-charge their plug-in hybrid vehicle only on three out of four days. Company car users, on average, re-charge only every second day.

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.

The performance, low cost, and fuel flexibility of ICEs makes it likely that they will continue to dominate the vehicle fleet for at least the next several decades, according to the report. DOE will focus on partial electrification because hybrid electric (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric (PHEVs) can access existing infrastructure.

In Li-ion batteries, Li ions (Li + ) leave the cathode during charging and move through the electrolyte and separator to intercalate into the anode. As the technology gets fixed, the anode is more of an issue related to fast charge. Generic Li-ion cell and various component technologies. The reverse happens on discharge.
