The conversion of methanol to hydrocarbons and water is virtually complete and essentially stoichiometric in the MTG process. In the first part, methanol is converted to an equilibrium mixture of methanol, dimethyl ether (DME), and water. Most of the hydrocarbon product boils in the gasoline boiling range.

Founded in 2005 in New Zealand, LanzaTech is the first company to successfully demonstrate production of fuel-grade ethanol from steel mill gases. The water is recovered and returned to the reactor system, minimizing water discharge from the process. The products and co-products are collected for downstream use.
