In Europe, it was smaller Jeeps—the subcompact Renegade and compact Compass family SUV—that got their plugs first. One’s the best of the dwindling segment of 7- and 8-seat vehicles that aren’t hulking SUVs. The other is the SUV that started it all, an iconic vehicle known the world over for ruggedness and go-anywhere capability.

And yep, it’s not an SUV, there’s no black cladding or raised ride heights here. The 77kWh battery pack is claimed to consume juice at an average 15.7-17.5kWh/100km The Cupra Born’s nicely hunched and detailed exterior measures up at just 4324mm long, 1809mm wide and 1540mm high, so it’s very much in the compact hatch segment.

Therefore, until we get quick-charge batteries -- based on new breakthroughs, Ill take a WAG and estimate that we will have real 5-minute quick-charge batteries in perhaps 10 years -- we are likely to get our juice mostly from our home chargers. Battery swapping wouldnt make economic sense without a considerable degree of standardization.
