Late last year, the government of Ireland set a target of 10% of all vehicles in the transport fleet to be powered by electricity by 2020. A €1 million project by Sustainable Energy Ireland to research, develop and demonstrate of vehicles nationally. This will represent some 250,000 cars on Irish roads over the next 12 years.

Building materials retailer Grange Builders Providers, of Baldoyle, Dublin, has purchased a Smith Newton truck for deliveries of building and DIY products. The 10-tonne truck is the largest pure electric vehicle on the road in Ireland. This represents some 250,000 cars, vans and trucks on Irish roads over the coming years.

The Irish Government; the ESB, Ireland’s largest electricity utility; and the Renault-Nissan Alliance announced a comprehensive partnership to position Ireland as a European leader in electric transport. Those who purchase electric cars can avail of the €5,000 (US$6,800) grant, which the Irish Government announced today.

Other actions included: In April 2009, Nissan introduced the Nissan ECO Series (NECO Series), which qualify for tax breaks under Japan’s new preferential tax scheme for environment-friendly vehicles. Deployment of infrastructure, including charging stations and incentives for zero-emissions vehicle purchases, are being studied.
