Jeep global CEO Christian Meunier closed out 2021 by announcing his brand’s goal of becoming the “zero emission freedom brand,” with the Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid (PHEV) as its first example. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV is powered by two electric motors and a 2.0-liter A More Efficient (And Quiet) Propulsion System.

This marketing choice by Ford is either a very bad idea (brand dilution) or a genius plan to move the pony car into the modern era. Good examples of all-new electric cars are the Nissan Leaf battery-electric and the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid , which both debuted in 2010 as 2011 models. Next up will be the ID.Buzz electric minivan.

That’s not surprising—the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, the company’s only previous plug-in hybrid, is a well-executed PHEV with an EPA-rated 32 miles of usable electric range that retains all the virtues of the Pacifica minivan. It was all-new for the 2018 model year, and was engineered from the start to accommodate 2021’s PHEV version.

Thankfully, since parts of the powertrain in the Circuit are also used in other Chrysler ENVI vehicles - like the all-electric USPS minivan that was unveiled earlier today - work that is done on one model can be applied to others. Chevys volt is exactly what a family with kids would need, as is the Tesla model S, and yea, theyre both pricey.
