In order to win the United States MPG crown for the 1985 through 1987 model years (for 1988, the Sprint Metro replaced the Sprint ER), the Sprint ER had a taller final drive gear ratio and a stingier camshaft than the regular Sprint. Driving a Sprint ER from Los Angeles to New York with three passengers sounds like a nightmare.
