Toyotas Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries are considered "non-hazardous waste" [See "high voltage electrical systems" ]. Lithium-Ion batteries share many characteristics with NiMH. Ive heard lithium-ion batteries can be dangerous if they overheat. The EPRI says lithium-ion batteries are ready now.
