Yesterday the UK Government announced immediate changes to the Plug-In car Grant, reducing the value to £2,500 and the number of models eligible. The value of the grant has been reduced by £500 to £2,500 and is only available on cars under £35,000. Additionally, MG has committed to topping up the grant to £3,000 until March 31, 2021.

5 million government grant was awarded in the 2020/2021 budget to help set up Adelaide-based manufacturing facilities. General Motor eCrate conversion kits – by late 2021 GM plans to offer battery and motor kits for classic cars, allowing an easy EV conversion. It could kick off with a sleek electric ute.

Granted, the recently-arrived Tesla Model Y makes just as much sense, but it wasn’t available as we were pulling this test together. You could buy an EV9 Air, then something like a petrol Kia Cerato hatch as a second car with the money saved. The Air’s standard kit’s hardly wanting. Of course the GT-Line has all the above too, but such decent inclusions in the Air (as you’d expect for $100k+) shows it’s a deeply kitted out car to live with.

If you build a car as a "kit car" with no real factory, then yes, it will never be an economic success. Why grant them the privledge to spend our money in the first place?
