To reduce the number of accidents in the global oil and gas industry caused by damaged pipelines, University of Houston researchers are developing an autonomous robot to identify potential pipeline leaks and structural failures during subsea inspections.

The grants will fund projects such as retrofitting older school buses to improve air quality for children riding to school, upgrading marine propulsion and agriculture engines, and replacing long haul truck engines. Port of Houston is replacing 14 drayage trucks. Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The new grant recipients were selected using a competitive merit-review process. The grants awarded were in response to RFP-I, a request for proposals the GRI Research Board issued on 25 April 2011. The Department has provided BP with high-quality 2D radiography that BP personnel are saying breaks all records for deep water radiography—breaking the previous record by more than 4,000 feet.

Like the Recovery Act-funded projects, the annual Clean Cities projects include grants for vehicles, infrastructure, and education. The initiative will provide financial and technical assistance to many large fleets including: ARAMARK, Efficiency Enterprises, Nestle Water Company, Sysco, and UPS to purchase 150 hybrid electric vehicles.
