Ford Motor Company said it will. end production of Mercury vehicles in the fourth quarter of this year to fully devote its financial, product development, production and marketing, sales and service resources toward further growing its core Ford brand while enhancing the Lincoln brand. in 2005 to 6.3% through the first quarter of 2010.

Mercury Marine , the largest US outboard manufacturer, recently introduced two new OptiMax outboard models for the northern hemisphere summer. The two new outboards, the 200 Pro XS and the 125 hp, use Orbital FlexDI direct injection fuel systems ( earlier post ), and are reported as having best in class fuel economy.

The bio-based polyurethane foam will be one of the new features in the new Ford Explorer—which will also deliver fuel economy at least 25% better than the current model—which goes in to production later this year. By year’s end, nearly 100% of Ford’s North American vehicle lineup will feature the more eco-friendly material.

Car buyers shouldn’t be forced to buy high-end bells and whistles when fuel economy and reducing emissions are their top priority. Ford, General Motors, Honda and Toyota all sell models with high hybrid value ratings, UCS noted. Hybrids don’t have to be luxury vehicles. The Prius scored a 9.8 out of a possible 10.

Ford notes that the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid’s projected fuel economy tops its nearest competitor—the 2010 Lexus HS 250h—by 6 mpg, while providing room for one more passenger and more standard luxury and segment-exclusive safety features. The combined gasoline engine and electric motor provide 191 net horsepower (142 kW).
