The 2014 Volt provides owners with fuel economy of EPA-estimated 98 MPGe (electric) and 35 city/40 highway on gasoline power. The Toyota Prius is the most frequently traded-in vehicle for a Volt. The Volt continues to attract new buyers to Chevrolet with 69% of Volt buyers new to GM.

A Dominion PHEV Prius and hybrid bucket truck. Two Toyota Prius hybrids have been converted with the Hymotion L5 Plug-in Conversion Module from A123Systems. The 5 kWh L5 pack, built with A123Systems’ nanophosphate Li-ion batteries, supports fuel economy of up to 100 mpg for 30-40 miles within the electrically assisted driving range.

Official fuel economy testing for all vehicles is conducted on chassis dynamometers, which are basically treadmills for cars and trucks. One subtlety of chassis dynamometer testing is that vehicle fuel economy measurements using decades-old standard speed profiles may be overly optimistic compared to today’s average on-road fuel use.

Now, researchers from the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, along with researchers from both the Idaho National Laboratory and the Argonne National Laboratory, are developing and testing a method that will predict the real-world fuel and electricity consumption of these vehicles.
