NREL study finds gasoline hybrid delivery trucks substantially reduce emissions and beat or maintain fuel economy compared to diesel vehicles

NREL’s Fleet Test and Evaluation Team recently completed a year-long technology evaluation of gasoline hybrid electric (gHEV) FedEx Express delivery trucks compared with conventional diesel vehicles. On a drive cycle representing routes with frequent stops and accelerations, the gHEV trucks exhibited a 20% improvement in fuel economy.

Interim NREL Report on In-Use Azure Balance Gasoline Hybrids in FedEx Fleet Finds Substantially Lower Tailpipe Emissions, Similar Fuel Economy to Diesels

Fuel economy was similar between the gHEVs and diesel vehicles, except for the highest kinetic intensity drive cycle where the hybrid exhibited ~20% higher fuel economy. FedEx has deployed 20 gasoline hybrid electric vehicles (gHEVs) on parcel delivery routes in the Sacramento and Los Angeles areas.

Zipcar introduces Honda Fit EV into UC Davis West Village fleet

It was the Chevrolet Sprint ER , and I've found a nicely intact example in a car graveyard just east of Sacramento. It also had an upshift light (located in the lower right corner of the cluster) to remind drivers that fuel economy was more important than brisk acceleration.

Chrysler Group launches second phase of PHEV minivan project

Three plug-in hybrid-electric Chrysler Town & Country minivans ( earlier post ) went into service with the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), bringing to 25 the total number of such vehicles on US roads. The plug-in hybrids will be subjected to temperature extremes and variations of drive cycles.
