Volvo and other automakers have been developing sealed and insulated batteries to further prevent some instances of thermal runaway. The high voltage systems pose little to no risk of electric shock, either while driving or recharging. The only partial risk comes from the thermal runaway phenomenon. THE BOTTOM LINE.

has fully embraced EVs and, after years of teasing with snazzy concepts, the real hardware is for sale–and is selling well. Volvo and its sister company Polestar has just started selling its EVs. Volvo and Polestar have indicated more plug-in models will follow. The Swedes (with some Chinese help) are bringing more EVs.

The vehicle will be recharged at night, plugged into a standard home outlet. Ford , Chrysler , Volvo Nissan , Subaru and VW have all indicated they will be bringing plug-in hybrids to the showroom floor for sale within the next few years. Toyota also is developing a plug-in hybrid, expected on the road by 2010.

As a comparison , in 2011, there were only two battery electric and 29 hybrid electric vehicle models offered for sale in the US. BMW, Mercedes and Volvo are but a few OEMs who already have or are planning to move to more centralized computing architectures, as well as taking over more of their own software development.
