By comparison, the Nissan LEAF carries a 99 MPGe (combined) EPA rating, while the smaller i-MiEV carries a 112 MPGe (combined) rating. And Tata Motors , an Indian industrial giant, is "working on an electric version of the Indica for the overseas market, slated to be launched by 2009," according to the Hindu Business Line. Mitsubishi could be the first with cars for sale if the UK distributor has its way. Its UK marketing plans are, however, unknown.

The i-MiEV is based on Mitsubishis i line of micro-cars which are quite popular in Japan. The four door i-Miev is only 11ft 1inches, 4ft 10inches wide, and 5ft 3inches tall but feels much roomier inside. Inside the car looks like a standard i-car but the gauges have very different meanings.

When a car is operating on the electric motor only, throttle and speed dependent synthesised sound projects an engine sound in front of the vehicle. When the powertrain control system switches the car back to running on the electric motor only, the synthesis controller instantaneously sets the system running again.

The car is noisy, with the hum of the electric motor omnipresent when youre not at a standstill.
