The Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) has partnered with the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE) and Smith Electric Vehicles Corporation (Smith Electric) to reduce vehicle emissions from delivery trucks in the Houston-Galveston region.

More than 2,200 units are already in service, with an additional 850 firm orders in backlog from cities such as New York City, Seattle, Houston, Ottawa and Puerto Rico. Houston Metro is placing an additional order for 80 Orion VII diesel-electric hybrid buses for 2010 delivery.

The project will deploy 502 alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles through 119 public and private fleets throughout the state. The program includes the installation of 10 alternative fuel refueling sites (two B20, one Electric Recharging, and seven CNG). Clean Energy Coalition’s CEC Michigan Green Fleets Initiative.

Many fleets are going electric, but to the best of our knowledge, none are doing so on the same scale as Amazon. The North American Council for Freight Efficiency told E&E News that some fleets have taken 36 months to get chargers up and running. Building the trucks appears to have been the easy part.
