Of the 11 PHEVs: 10 are extended range electric vehicles—Toyota’s concept Prius PHEV is the only non-series hybrid plug-in. 9 (82%) are production prototypes or concepts; only the Fisker Karma and Karma-S are in production or near production. (Tesla is also displaying its battery pack, for a 43 rd entry.).

Kia had its Soul EV on the market and made its presence known, then added the Niro EV (and PHEV & Hybrid), but now is adding the EV6 crossover. The Prius Prime becomes Toyota’s leader with a plug. Battery-gasoline hybrids go back more than 20 years to the first Toyota Prius, but real mainstream battery-only electric EVs are only in their second decade. The Toyota Prius, a battery-gasoline hybrid, is a very famous and recognizable example of this approach. There is no all-electric or gas-only Prius—that’s not its identity.

The SSI study captures 12 different PEV models from eight vehicle manufacturers, including GM (Chevrolet Volt); Nissan (LEAF); Tesla (Model S); Ford (Focus EV, C-Max Energi and Fusion Energi); Honda (Fit EV and Accord PHEV); Toyota (Prius Plug-in and RAV4 EV); Mitsubishi (i-MiEV); and Daimler (Smart Fortwo ED).
