Email Japan Accounts for 70% of Electric Vehicle Patents A new report from Japan's Patent Office has found that the country comprises most of the patents for electric vehicles, which include EVs, hybrids and fuel cell vehicles. by: Tech-On! by: Tech-On! Diesel hybrid buses have brought that up a bit, but nowhere near the 50 mile per gallon level. Technically, buses based on the MESA will be serial hybrids, similar to the Chevy Volt , because they will drive on electricity but use a gas generator to recharge. Most buses get about three to five miles a gallon.
