Well, it’s 2024, the changes to the federal EV tax credit have officially taken effect, and it’s a bit of a mixed bag. GM will introduce the Chevrolet Volt extended range electric vehicle with a starting MSRP of $41,000; after applying the Federal income tax credit of $7,500, the price drops to $33,500. When the battery runs low, a gasoline-powered range extender extends the driving range for 300 miles on a full tank of fuel.

Also of note: No Rivian electric truck qualifies for the full $7,500 tax credit amount in 2024, at this time. The credit amount on these models has fallen to $3,750. The president is hoping to use incentives to get one million plug-in hybrid vehicles to consumers by 2015. Plug-in hybrids differ from hybrids on the road today in that they can go longer distances on battery power and can be recharged via electrical outlets. Chevrolet next year will introduce the Volt, a plug-in hybrid electric car. The Volt runs on an electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery pack, but also has an onboard gasoline-powered charging system to help extend the cars range when a charging station isnt available.
