The NETL study serves as a key input for analyses conducted by EPA and DOE. Oil sands comprise clay, sand, water, and bitumen. For pipeline transport, bitumen is diluted to reduce its viscosity by mixing it with a diluent, a light hydrocarbon liquid such as natural gas condensate or refinery naphtha.
