PACCAR will work with Cummins to offer the new Cummins X15N natural gas engine ( earlier post ) in Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks. PACCAR, Cummins and several customers including FedEx Freight and Knight-Swift will demonstrate the ability to achieve lower carbon emissions for long-haul transport using internal combustion engine technology.

The Westport GX 2010 15L engine has been certified by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to 2010 emissions compliance—0.2 g/bhp-hr particulate matter (PM)—without the use of emissions credits. Factory installation of the GX is available in both Kenworth and Peterbilt tractors.

Eaton Corporation has established a program to assist diesel truck fleet owners in applying for the $156 million in grants for diesel hybrid trucks that are available under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Fleets are able to purchase multiple trucks. Dontia Warren.

Transportation sources accounted for approximately 40% of all GHG emissions in the US in 2006; medium- and heavy-duty vehicles (above 8,500 gross vehicle weight rating) represent about 22% of the transportation emissions, up from 15 percent in 1990, according to the EPA. The results are specific to long-haul trucks.
