A recent white paper by Leslie Bromberg of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center and Wai K. Methanol first surfaced as a potentially interesting transportation fuel in the wake of the oil crisis in 1973. The early interest resulted in several programs, mainly based in California, for its use. It is a safe fuel.

The transportation sector was responsible for over 7 million tons of NO x emissions in the US in 2014, with 50% of this sector’s NO x attributed to heavy-duty on- and off-road vehicles and equipment. This has resulted in higher catalyst loading per volume of substrate and led to downsizing of systems from those available in 2010.
