Honda, Toyota and Nissan rank higher than US manufacturers for passenger cars (Nissan and GMC are effectively equal), but the three Japanese manufacturers trail GMC when building light duty trucks, while only Honda surpasses Ford. The estimates are ranked by the firms’ light truck efficiency; the rankings change considerably.

Some good news at last for the battered and bruised automotive industry in North America where the new, downsized General Motors Company emerged from bankruptcy yesterday. The company has been created from the old GM’s strongest operations and is built on four core brands: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC.

GMC confirmed a starting price just under $100,000 and an EPA range of 440 miles for its top 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 electric pickup. That includes four-wheel steering and CrabWalk capabilities, plus GM’s SuperCruise and the same very high-power charging rates as the GMC Hummer EV.

Automakers are finding it difficult to challenge those boldface numbers with internal combustion alone, especially as engines are relentlessly downsized to meet regulations. A hybrid Chevrolet Corvette is expected to deliver about 662 kW (900 hp), even as its GM parent readies a 1,014-hp GMC Hummer EV.
