The nickel-metal hydride used in EV batteries is in maintenance-free sealed cells, so nothing gets in or out. Don’t worry about dodging puddles in your Prius! Charging in the rain is safe and carries no added threat of short-circuiting, sparks, or other dangers. What happens if water does get into the battery.

The upcoming plug-in Prius will use the traditional nickel metal hydride battery system, but future versions will likely see the addition of a lithium ion battery pack. The fleet models will be part of a test bed for Toyota and future development of the plug-in Prius may at some point lead to a consumer model.

We will have similar solutions available for better (but more expensive) nickel-metal hydride or lithium-ion batteries.) to demonstrate its PRIUS+ approach using nickel-metal hydride batteries, in response to automakers continuing comments that "the batteries arent ready."
