Open Source Civic EV Kit

After spending the past year and a half converting a Porsche 914 to an electric vehicle, I decided to expand my horizons by designing an open-source electric vehicle (EV) conversion kit for a commonly used car. The Saturn came up a distant second, but everyone agreed that the Civic was the best. Damn the torpedoes. Here we go.

This year, however, as hybrids have gained in popularity amid high gasoline prices, Dr. Frank, now 72 years old, is getting some traction: A U.S. Saturn and a 200-horsepower electric motor.

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. What the Volt has that electric cars lack is the ability to extend its range by means of burning gasoline, the most popular fuel among cars in the US.
