Processing the Engine Wire Harness

Open Source Civic EV Kit

This evening, I took apart the engine harness that we looked at back here. I'm also hesitant to design the battery hold-downs right now because all I have is foam-core mock-ups instead of the real thing. If I can get some real Deka 9A31 batteries, I can design the hold-downs more effectively.

Setting up KeepOut Areas

In preparation for designing the front and firewall battery racks, I wanted to make sure the engine compartment had several existing components in it so I could determine clearance more accurately. The rear support beam of the firewall battery rack will traverse the width of the engine compartment.

Blockages from the Motor/Transmission

This allows much more engine hoist room and lets more light in when I'm working at night in my tiny garage. I had to orient the motor/transmission assembly on the furniture dolly lengthwise to allow the engine hoist legs to get around it. I wanted to get the motor in place so I could properly design an end-plate for the Warp9.

Ordering Gauges

I also have to design the schematics for the oil light and overtemp light. In order to protect the BatMon boards from water splash (at least in the engine compartment), I ordered a bunch of 2x2" plastic boxes. I don't know if these will work since I don't know the heat dissipation requirements, but I'll give it a shot.

Taking some initial measurements

Open Source Civic EV Kit

Before I do too much with the vehicle, I wanted to take some measurements so that they wouldn't get lost after I remove the engine. If I can put the batteries right behind the rear seat in a box, I won't have to cut into the steel floor, making the design simpler to install. I'll also be able to keep the spare tire. Cheers, Tim.

Going Back to U-Pull-It - Don't try this at Home

After getting out the throttle body in about ten minutes (faster than I expected), I started looking down at the engine block and transmission. Gee, if I remove a play around a bit, I can get some experience with removing an engine. Three hours later (ugh), the engine and transmission came crashing to the ground.

Battery Racks, Continued

To keep the system stable, I wanted to utilize these 8mm threaded holes near the back of the engine compartment. This is a picture just behind the passenger side shock tower in the engine compartment where the original 12V battery used to be bolted into. That will be another engineering project. square tubing and 1.5"
